The comments made by Dan, Scott and Jeremy are exactly on point in that it appears that we are following, not leading. The first example is our reaction to the Steward’s information that the Dockmaster would “walk” if he didn’t receive $20/hr. Without even talking to the Dockmaster about his reported demand we gave the Dockmaster what he demanded! The second example is that while we have voted to advertise for a new Steward, it now appears we are going to once again change our plans and accept Freida as the “Steward in training” so that our Steward will retire at the end of the year as he advised us that he would do! Once again, we have not talked to Freida with regard to her compensation or her availability to fully function as our present Steward functions.
If we accept Option 2 and pay her at the rate of $18/hr. she will no doubt want to be paid for every hour that she is at PYC doing her dockhand job and every hour she is in a “Steward training mode” outside of her dockhand hours. This could be very expensive for PYC.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are in trouble!

The primary issue here is “who is running the organization”, the board or the staff?     I like Jerry immensely and I think Frieda would do a great job, but the decision is not theirs.  
 
I don’t understand why Jerry wants to bequeath his job to his successor.  He’s decided to retire, and as far as I’m concerned that’s cast in stone.   I’m OK with Frieda, but I too do not like ultimatums.  
 
However I’d be OK with Frieda if she agrees to our salary guidelines, and if not, then we should continue our search.   The danger here is that we have disgruntled employees for this season, and that’s not acceptable.
 
We’re a bit behind the curve on this one!
