Wow, I agree with Scott and Jeremy. Plus I don't think our current dockmaster is worth more money the Freida, our Steward in training, Freida is really good, except for getting her license renewed. We have gotten ourselves into a jam. This conversation we are now having should have happened many, many months ago, back in 2017, but I don't think most of us knew there was a problem brewing until we started digging into the numbers. So it seems this will be the 5th year in a row with an over 10% increase in the payroll that we have not budgeted for? A reminder the club operated in the red in 2017 so we could be a whole lot more in the red for 2018 if we don't come up with a plan to compensate for this year's proposed payroll increase.
How is this going to look to the club members in September when we need to ask for another $100 increase, just to break even? Seems like this has shown we have a huge flaw in our process and we need to think about the payroll budget annually, in August, like we do for the Capital Improvement fund. The Commodore, Vice and Rear work with the Steward and Dockmaster on it and then hold Steward and Dockmaster accountable to that payroll budget the following year. If they come under budget, they get a bonus, but the bonus payout won't exceed the payroll budget limit. The budget could be similar to what Glenn sent out, thank you Glenn. It accounts for hours, payroll and education/licenses for the next year. As a side note, I get the feeling we are overstaffed during the week days when there are no events, so maybe we don't need all the we have had in the past few years?
Also what if Frieda does not get her launch driver's license by June 1, she will be way over the dock hand band which is $12/hr. Can we give her a stipulation that if she does not have a license by June 1 she will then gets dock hand pay until she gets the license? She has had over a year to renew her license and and has yet to do so, from what Mike said at the meeting. If she doesn't get a license are we in a bad place for launch drivers?
By the way, how are we doing on the job descriptions? Can we get them wrapped up by the next BOD meeting?
Side note 2: In my industry the annual increases run 2%-4%, not the 30% increase being proposed for our dockmaster.
Roy

I agree with Scott, just like with the new Steward we are looking to negotiate for the position. Given it is so close to the season we may need to go higher than we want but there should be a clear understanding that if we need to go to the top end $20 is maxed out and there is no raise coming in the future. In my opinion, Mike has not risen to the exceptional status as a dockmaster, given the discussion around children of members using the club and the dinghies issue, these are situations that should have been handled by either the Dockmaster and Steward.

Hi All,
The document looks great - glad we were able to come to the "salary band" agreements!
As far as $20 for the dockmaster for this season, I will add my thoughts:
We spent a good deal of time discussing the idea of a max on these ranges - to put this position at the $20 "band max" after (correct me if i'm wrong) 2 full seasons, seems a bit against the discussion we had on Thursday. In addition, using last years numbers, this represents a 33% ($15 -> $20/hour) raise and over $5,000 (~1,050 hours worked last season) in increased payroll on this position alone. I will leave the ultimate negotiation in the hands of the proper officers, but making this change due to an ultimatum and offering 100% of what was demanded (and it is a demand when you state if you don't get it you're leaving!) sets a bad precedent in my view. What position are we in if the same thing happens next April and he asks for $25 or he's leaving?
While I am at the club a fair amount during the season, I will defer to others to speak to the merits of an increase on the grounds of performance, but from a financial standpoint anyone that warrants a 33% raise should decidedly stand far over and above any expectations that could possibly have been placed on them. I am not opposed to an increase, but one of this magnitude does not sit well with me from a financial standpoint, if nothing else.
As we all know, there has been much discussion of late being fiscally responsible when it comes to staffing. I feel that a 33% raise to the point of max out the newly created "band" flies in the face of all our conversations.
I look forward to the additional thoughts of the board!

Good Morning,
Attached is a document summarizing our many discussions using great input from the BOD. This document IS NOT perfect, but I think it reflects what we can do within a set budget. As I state in the attachment, paying 2 stewards for overlap inflates the amount a bit, but that is a cost of doing business.
Also, in my summary I have increased Freida's pay from $17 to $18 per hour. No matter where we end up with Freida, she is an excellent resource for the club.
I have placed Mike, the dock master at $20 per hour. This is where we are....I have been told by both Jerry and Mike that if this is not done, he will leave. My feeling is this.......with only one experienced dock hand, other than Freida returning (I am not counting Shapiro as he is end of season only) this is not the time to be hunting down a new dock master. $20 fits into our band and I recommend keeping MIke. If any of you have a problem with this I need to know no later Sunday night. April 15.
Thanks,
Glenn
