I scrupulously avoided the use of passwords when I created the PYC Website
many years ago, and resisted putting them on for the 10 years I ran the
website because of the age and sophistication of our members.   I suspect
many members still don't know the password even though it's been the same
for years.   Password management on an individual member level would be a
problem. it's the single biggest reason people call the 'helpdesk' in
companies.   Which has led to the development of 'self-service'  password
recovery mechanisms like "what you know' password hints to recover the
password, but this is not available in the current incarnation of our
website, which is run by Chris Weller.

 

If security is an issue , there are now MEMBER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS developed
to handle clubs and organizations  (such as www.wildapricot.com
<http://www.wildapricot.com> )   which would automate all of the club
functions including member billing, newsletters, password management, event
reservations and payments, etc.   I'm in the process of discussing one of
these for another non-profit organization on whose board I serve.   I'm
happy to discuss it if there is any interest as I've done a significant
amount of research on the subject.

General public and minutes

 

I'm not sure the general public can get to the links behind the password. If
you had been logged into that PYC section then closed the tab and then did
your search you may have been able to see the minutes because the password
was still cached by the browser.

 

I tried the search tonight, clicked on the Minutes link and it came up
requiring me to enter the password.

 

Ctrl Shift Delete will clear the cache, after that see if you can get in by
the link.

Hi All - I had actually been meaning to bring this up previously but just
thought of it again as I went back to review the minutes from the last
meeting.  I'm not sure folks were aware but I think that we might want to
look into better access management of some of the "password protected" areas
of the current PYC site.   

 

I bring this up as I discovered some time back (prior to my presence on the
BOD) that a simple google search of "Portsmouth Yacht Club Minutes" reveals
PDF versions of minutes for many of the past meetings (see below, or try for
yourself on google). I am of the opinion that these are documents that
should not be available to the general public - particularly items such as
monthly Treasurer's Reports and discussions of ongoing business/bids
conducted through outside vendors.

 





 

As I am not sure who handles the PYC web presence, I thought bringing it to
the attention of the board made sense.
