[Board] Shoals and Local Moorings

We might be out there this weekend but without proper equipment like a barge with a lift we can't really take a look at the tackle very easily without busting something like our backs, the chain is heavy and there will probably be boats on them. We can probably buzz around and look at the pendants and the general condition above the water.

Thanks Roy,It appears we still need to take a look at what is out there soon. Perhaps the IOS needs to be looked at first...but we certainly do not want anything to happen again like last year. Perhaps what we need to look at is our contract and see if there are some loose spots that need to change for next year. If any of you are heading out to the Shoals soon, can you give the moorings a look. Thanks,Nanc

Slight correction here, the PYC and Pepperrell Cove moorings did get a quick cleaning before they went in. 3 of us removed the dead stuff from them at docks in, did inspections on the tackle and then sent our notes to Geoff and Dick. The tackle was serviceable and we weren't concerned about anyone using them though some were showing signs of typical wear and probably getting close to the time that they should be replaced. Meaning the shackles, which are pretty hefty, had worn away a third or so of their original thickness. So there was still a lot of "meat" left to them but it might be time to think about replacing them. I can find that email tonight if you want.
The IOS moorings didn't get inspected by us this year. I was out at Star Island on May 4th to do some work on the island and was going to take a look at the moorings and shackles but the moorings were already in the water and not on shore.
We do pay PMC a fair amount of money but if our contract says they have until the end of June to perform the maintenance there maybe little we can do about that this year. Dick has asked them when PYC will be scheduled in and we can let the BOD know what they say. I'm not too concerned about the condition of the moorings based on what I saw at docks in.

Dick, thank you for the response but I do not think this is a situation that should wait until the end of June. If we are renting our moorings, or have our members using our moorings they should all be in good working order now. I know that the moorings were put in dirty – never cleaned last fall, and not cleaned this spring. Not inflated properly nor marked properly and now really seem to be covered with kelp. We pay Pepperrell Mooring a lot of money to not get completed until basically the end of the 2nd month of actual sailing season. Regarding the pennants, are we replacing them or is Pepperrell Mooring? Do you all know we have a contract with a company near Home Depot ( I have to find out the actual name) but they offer us a good discount on supplies because we pay by check.
On the new dingy dock – have we ever considered Pickering as a possible quote? They are close and always working around the New Castle area and I am pretty confident with all the work they have done for us in the past they would be interested in offering a quick quote.
Thanks
Nanc

We have a contract with them to complete this work by the end of June. We have a plan for what has to be done and an agreement with them to do the work. They have 1000 moorings to maintain. I am sure we can be comfortable that the moorings are functionally in good shape even if they need some cosmetic work to make them look better. All of the pennants are scheduled to be replaced this year. Geoff was very responsive when I forwarded Russ's email and responded almost immediately today. This is very early in the season. Lets allow them time to get the work done as defined in the contract.

Hi Nancy,
Marty and I spent Friday night out at the Shoals. Absolutely beautiful night for this early in the season. There were 7 boats on moorings 2 of them on PYC moorings.

While there, we could not help but notice the condition of our PYC moorings.
It is obvious that they have not been serviced yet. But, more than that, they are in generally poor condition.

One of our most popular moorings has had it's pennant cut off. Two more have so much kelp growing on them they are being pulled over on their side.
All of the moorings need to be relettered PYC Members Only.
All need attention paid to their mooring pennants.

Dan and I have also talked about some additional signage that could be attached to the pennants. This could explain the protocol for the use of our moorings.

The Isles of Shoals moorings are one of our most valuable assets. They need some TLC and they need it fast. We invite visiting yachtsmen to use our moorings, when not being used by a member. The condition of these moorings is a direct reflection on us as a club.

Please feel free to share this email with the board

Best Regards,
P/C Russ Roth
